Over the last century, the laws and rules governing trademark rights have been expanded in number and complexity in many countries to address the growing needs of trademark owners faced with globalization, the expansion of Internet access and use, and the growth of multi-national companies and international shipping. Countries that once had few if any rules governing trademarks now have well-populated registers and established legal systems for registering and protecting marks. Jurisdictions that previously administered their respective systems independently are now members or signatories of one or more treaties or conventions that create an overlapping array of legal regimes and options for trademark owners.
Since its founding in 1925, the chief purpose of Trademarks Throughout the World has been to assemble summaries of the laws and legal systems of many jurisdictions into one coherent and easy-to-use resource. To continue to achieve this goal, it has been necessary to constantly expand and update this publication, a process that continues throughout the year and culminates in updates published three times a year. These updates are comprised of contributions from a carefully selected international team of trademark practitioners who share their considerable expertise and knowledge of local laws and procedures.
As a result of the diligent work of this dedicated team, readers worldwide continue to rely on Trademarks Throughout the World to learn what national and international protection is available for marks in other jurisdictions, to choose between multiple legal options, to comply with local rules and procedures, and to find trademark counsel in other countries for critical guidance and representation.
As global trade continues to expand and the value of trademarks to businesses continues to increase, Trademarks Throughout the World has never been more relevant and remains an invaluable resource to trademark professionals after more than 90 years.
